Slow Stitch Group for Parents of Children with Special Needs

This group was run in Reading in collaboration with Reading Sewing Bee. In the July of 2023 a group of parents met to share and slow stitch. Each week the parents stitched a small piece, or two, using repurposed materials, and the idea of slow stitching (which is simple, basic stitching, done without a particular plan at a gentle, rhythmic pace). The aim was to provide creative support and the chance to enjoy the process and share experiences.

The individual slow stitch pieces were brought together to create the final larger piece. This piece focussed on the theme “life as a parent of a child with special needs” and the individual stitched pieces were collated across the patchwork background by Kathy.

Community textile - Kings Coronation 2023

This piece was created as a community project, where people collected a pack of fabric pieces and stitched these together using either hand stitch or machine stitch. These smaller pieces were then collated by Kathy with the support of members Made in Mortimer, local craft group. The youngest contributor was 8 years old, while the oldest was in her 80s.

The final piece is displayed locally, in the Methodist Hall which is used for many local events and playgroup.

Community Eco Art

These were created in local schools using reclaimed fabric, plastic bags, paddling pools and bottle tops.

The school pupils and the community gathered the materials and children created the large works of art around the school under the guidance of Kathy Ross. This provided opportunity to discuss how materials do (and don't) degrade and to watch their curiosity and interest as they wondered at what we were doing and then got engrossed in the process and outcome.
